True valerian is known scientifically today as Valeriana officinalis. The plant pictured here, identified as Valeriana montana rotundifolia, is now known as Centranthus calcitrapa. It is a hardy perennial, native to southern Europe.
How to care
- Pruning Cut down stems in autumn or if self-seeding is a problem then cut back hard in July after their first flowering.
